"My friend Karen says that life is like a sound board. When music is mixed, the sound technician needs to adjust the levels to make the music sound its best. If one person or instrument needs to be really loud, everything else can't be loud too because the board can't handle it and, more importantly, the music won't sound its best.
The same is true in life. If one thing is dominating during a particular season, that's okay, as long as adjustments are made to other areas."
-FRINGE HOURS: Making Time for You by Jessica Turner
Rare is the circumstance where all levels must be silenced but one. An example might be staying in the hospital for treatment. Obviously you should not be focusing your attention on the bills at home, the kids’ homework schedules, or when the last time you Spring-cleaned was. But this is a rare (hopefully) occasion where your health and wellness level needs to be much higher than the other levels, to the point of it being your one and only focus, as much as it can be.
All other situations usually allow for a readjustment moment and scanning. What sounds are popping up? Is there a nagging static? What are things nagging thoughts circling our heads? Carefully, we can begin to name these things (being mindful of the types of words and the sense they bring) and decide:
-Does this need first priority? Second? Can it wait? Who and what do I most value?
-If not high priority: Can someone else do this? Indeed, is there someone else that should be doing this? Does it need to be done?
Name it, decide what to do about it (adjust the volume, or focus, accordingly). Remember to breathe. But not too fast. That’s hyperventilating and that’s for another blog entry.
All the good stuff-
Jen
